Local Area

Falmouth is a lovely seaside town, which has had a complete upturn in economic fortune, following the merger a few years ago of Falmouth Art School and Exeter University and the build out of a new campus in Penryn. There are 5000+ students now. Many of them from the Creative Arts and high technology sector, who stay on in Falmouth after their degree and set up independent businesses, making it a really interesting place to visit and stay in. It makes such a difference to see a thriving seaside town. The Docks are still working and are renowned for repairs to big ships from around the world, helped by Falmouth being the 4th deepest harbour in the world. An upturn over the last decade in sales of Super Yachts has seen a local Falmouth company grow exponentially to supply super yachts to the richest people in the world.

  • The newest is called Culture and currently opens 2 nights a week. A very well regarded local chef from one of Falmouth’s Hotels has now opened up his own restaurant on Custom quay. He offers a 7 course tasting menu for £65 per person. Although expensive, it is a real treat and if you want to celebrate something or just treat yourself, I would recommend it.
  • Amanzi – a restaurant run by a South African lady who serves a South African menu, food is very good and they are a 2 minute walk from the house.
  • The Chain Locker pub, has undergone a major refurbishment, has a pub on one side of the alley and a restaurant overlooking Falmouth Marina on the other – a 1 minute walk from the house.
  • For a coffee, or lunch, try the WindJammer, which you pass on the way to Tesco Express, it is set back and has a balcony over the water as well as inside tables. Reasonable prices.
  • For breakfast, I particularly like Fuel (you can do lunch and/or dinner as well), they do full English (my husbands favourite). My favourite is pancakes with fruit & syrup.
  • For further afield, try Mylor (if you like walks, you can walk there by getting the 3 minute ferry across to Flushing and walking to Mylor (stunning scenery), the prize is lunch at Castaways (for outside tables you can just turn up, inside tables, I would book). I typically grab a cab back to the house, although if you are good walkers the walk back is viable. You can of course drive there in 10-15 mins.
  • I love the walk from the house to Gyllyngvase Beach, and a coffee or lunch at the lovely cafe/restaurant on the beach – ‘The Gylly Cafe’.
  • Harbour View for take away fish and chips and also has a sit down restaurant at the back overlooking the harbour -2 minutes from the house on the Main Street.

A lovely trip, is to walk through the town to the Princes Pier where all the little ferries go from and catch a boat up to the National Trust Gardens – really beautiful to visit and they have a nice little cafe for coffee or lunch with seating inside and covered seating outside, if it’s warm enough.

Or take a boat across to St Mawes which is small and charming with a wonderful castle.

In the other direction and a ‘must see’ is Pendennis Castle. A leisurely 25 minute walk from the house.

The only ‘road trip’ I do when I am in Nightingale is to go and watch a play at the Minack Theatre. A completely breathtaking amphitheatre, built by hand by one amazing woman and her handyman (maybe google the Minack and see if there is anything on that might interest you), or it is a nice trip to go and see it even when there is nothing on.

Enjoy!
